Remove a Known PDF Password Safely
Remove an opening password from an authorised PDF copy using the known password, then handle the unencrypted result carefully.
Open the tool ↓Confirm authority and the known password
Use this workflow for a PDF you own or are authorised to modify. It runs a decryption operation with the password you supply. It is not a password-cracking or password-recovery service and cannot establish whether you have permission to distribute the underlying document.
Unlock PDF
Use the dedicated password workflow to load the PDF decryption engine and inspect its result.
Open Unlock PDF →Test with a document you created
A useful practice fixture is a harmless PDF protected using Protect PDF. Keep its original and known password. Select the protected copy in the dedicated unlocker, enter that password and choose Unlock & download.
- Confirm that the source opens with the expected password in a normal viewer.
- Use the same password in the unlocker.
- Download the new
-unlocked.pdfcopy. - Open it in a fresh viewer session and check that the password prompt is gone.
- Review the pages and features important to your use case.
Know what changes after decryption
The output is an unencrypted copy. It no longer provides the source’s password barrier, so choose its storage and sharing location accordingly. Removing a password does not erase the document’s sensitive content or make it safe for public distribution.
The qpdf WebAssembly workflow processes file bytes in the browser. The engine must load successfully, and large files still require device memory. Normal website network requests remain separate from the local decryption operation.
Distinguish restrictions from recovery
Some documents use permissions or encryption arrangements that differ from a simple opening-password case. The tool does not provide a comprehensive rights-analysis interface. Do not infer that a successful download overrides a legal restriction or establishes authorisation.
Decryption also does not prove an original digital signature remains valid after document processing. Verify any signature or interactive feature that matters in an appropriate PDF viewer, and retain the original protected copy when needed for records.
Troubleshoot a rejected password
Check case, keyboard layout and accidentally copied spaces. Verify the same password directly in a viewer before repeating attempts. A damaged PDF, incompatible encryption structure or failed browser engine can produce an error independent of the password. Obtain a valid authorised copy from the source when necessary. If the next task is selecting a few pages, Extract PDF Pages is a separate operation on the checked unencrypted copy.
