Split a PDF into Separate Document Files

Create separate PDF documents from one source by choosing output groups rather than one combined subset.

Use the interactive tool ↓

Choose splitting when you need several outputs

Splitting creates multiple documents from one source. Extracting selected pages into one combined PDF is a different task. Decide the boundaries of each output before entering a selection so that an application form and its supporting appendix do not end up in the wrong file.

Follow a six-page example

Suppose pages 1–3 are a form and pages 4–6 are an appendix. Choose By page ranges and enter 1-3, 4-6. The comma separates output groups, so this produces two PDFs, not one six-page selection.

For a two-page form plus a single receipt on page 6, enter 1-2, 6. Choose Every page separately only when you want one output file per page. The utility initiates separate downloads; it does not bundle the browser-side results into a ZIP.

  1. Load the source and confirm its displayed page count.
  2. Choose range groups or every-page mode.
  3. Check the intended boundaries, then select Split & download.
  4. Open each downloaded file and verify its first and final page.

Use the physical PDF page numbers

Selections are one-based PDF positions. A printed page label such as “iii” or “Page 10” can differ from the file’s actual position because of covers or preliminary pages. Count positions in a PDF viewer rather than blindly copying printed labels.

The shared selector sorts and deduplicates pages within a selection. Reversed ranges are normalised. A range extending past the end is clipped to the available pages, whereas a single page beyond the end is rejected. Enter precise in-bounds ranges instead of relying on clipping.

Check downloads and document features

Browsers can ask permission for several downloads. If only the first output appears, check that permission and the downloads list before repeating the whole operation. Keep the original while verifying the expected number of outputs.

Page copying can affect forms, signatures, attachments and other document-level features. Do not infer feature preservation from a correct page count alone. Large sources can also exhaust browser memory even though document processing is local.

When you wanted one subset instead

Use Extract PDF Pages for pages 1–3 and 6 combined into a single new PDF. Use Merge PDF to combine already separate output documents in whole-file order.
